Après plus de 13 heures passées à polir le miroir, il est temps de passer à l’étape suivante : La parabolisation. Tout d’abord, un dernier contrôle s’impose; il faut s’assurer qu’il n’existe plus de piqures de gris à la surface du verre. Un petit microscope de poche grossissant 30x permet de se rendre compte que tout le gris à disparu. On peut noter l’apparition de quelques filandres qui s’estomperont je l’espère au cours de la parabolisation.
La parabolisation est l’étape ultime de la réalisation du miroir. Elle consiste à rendre optiquement utilisable le miroir. En effet après mes 13 heures de polissage, la surface est toujours assimilable à une portion de sphère. Or un miroir sphérique ne peut être utilisé en astronomie car il ne permet pas de renvoyer la lumière qu’il reçoit des étoiles en un seul point. L’image serait donc floue. 
Pour que les rayons incidents parallèles soient renvoyés en un seul point focal, il faut que la surface du miroir soit un paraboloà¯de de révolution. Nous allons donc continuer à frotter le miroir mais cette fois-ci en utilisant des courses particulières dites “de parabolisation”.
L’écart entre la sphère et la parabole est très faible: de l’ordre de 1 µm. Cet écart est situé au centre du miroir qui est plus creux et au bord du miroir qui est plus évasé. Ainsi, le rayon de courbure des zones centrales est plus court et celui des zones externes est plus long. Pour mesurer ces infimes variations, on utilise un appareil spécialement conçu pour l’occasion: l’appareil de foucault. Il permet d’amplifier 1 000 000 de fois les défauts à la surface du verre.
Une lanterne fournit une source lumineuse; cette lumière est renvoyée par le miroir et un couteau i
ntercepte l’image formée au centre de courbure. La fente lumineuse est à gauche dans notre cas. Si le couteau est en avant du RC, il intercepte les rayons venant de la droite, s’il est en arrière il intercepte ceux de gauche. Au centre de courbure, on observe une teinte plate si le miroir est sphérique et des zones noires et brillantes complémentaires si le miroir est parabolique. On utilise un masque de Couder afin de connaitre les rayons de courbure de chaque zone. Par calcul, on connait le tirage qu’il faut avoir pour une zone donnée. Ainsi, on continue à frotter tant que ce tirage n’est pas atteint.
Ma première mesure m’a donné une amplitude du tirage de 0.16 mm alors qu’il faut un peu plus de 5 mm entre les zones 
centrale et externe. J’ai donc continué à frotter et j’en suis actuellement à environ 5 mm…C’est donc presque bon… Il faut continuer à paraboliser un peu et commencer à faire des mesures précises avec l’écran de Couder… La suite au prochain épisode.
